Peter
M. Twomey
In
July of 1997, the Groton-Dunstable community suffered
a tragic loss when Peter Twomey - a recent graduate
of Groton-Dunstable Regional High School - was
killed in a car accident.
Peter was a consistent three-sport athlete and
captain of both his soccer and basketball teams.
A National Honor Society student, Peter had been
accepted at Providence College. Peter was also
active in his community bringing his commitment
and humor to every task he undertook.
In 1997, a committee of Groton-Dunstable residents
began planning for the renovation of a gymnasium
facility that had fallen into disrepair known
as the "New Gym" on the main campus
of the high school. In 1998, more than 600 residents
petitioned the school committee to rename the
restored facility the Peter Twomey Youth Center.
In January 1999, the new center was dedicated.
Today the Peter Twomey Youth Center is a self-supporting
facility that provides space for youth athletic
leagues, adult education, and youth groups in
Groton and Dunstable.
Peters younger brother, Greg, was a member
of the New England Colonials 00 team
that traveled to Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and
Denmark. The Peter M. Twomey Memorial game featuring
the International Colonials and a Groton-Dunstable
area team is played annually in July.
From 1999 to 2010, the Peter M. Twomey Spirit
Award was presented each summer to the International
Colonials' player who demonstrated a high level
of play, leadership, and sportsmanship over the
team's New England tour. |
